Iona Crawford-Topp

Iona Crawford Topp was born and raised in rural North Yorkshire, she grew up surrounded by craftpeople as her father was an Artist Blacksmith and many family friends were potters, stone masons and carpenters. Iona always had a keen interest in the north east coastline and she went on to study Marine Biology at Newcastle University.

Throughout her studies she worked in a local fine dining restaurant, it was here that she came across Jane Schaffer, a potter from york, making tableware for the restaurant. The combination of craft and fine food really captivated her imagination and Iona decided to follow this new interest.

Made in North Yorkshire

Iona graduated from the prestigious DCCOI Ceramics Skills Course in Thomastown, Kilkenny, Ireland. Here she was trained in production throwing as well as glaze chemistry and kiln firings.

Iona now lives and works in North Yorkshire, working from her fathers old blacksmith workshop which is now her studio.

Celebrating Craftsmanship

Ionas work is both material and process led, she firmly believes in the importance of craftsmanship and the benefit of making with our hands. All of her work is made with functionality in mind, they are designed and made to be used every day in the home.

Inspiration for Ionas work comes not only from the material and the function but also from natural variations in our landscape, specifically the coastlines of the UK and Ireland. Drawing on her time studying marine biology, aswell as two years living by the sea in County Waterford, she incorporates subtle textures and colours of the geology and biodiversity of our coastlines into her work.
